Hofstra Lacrosse programs go 0-3 this week, Stony Brook Men dominated their SUNY rival and both LIU programs one close conference matchups. An active week for Long Island division 1 schools, here is what went down.

The Hofstra women lost to 14th ranked Drexel 15-11 on Sunday in Philadelphia, the second time the Pride lost to the Dragons this season after their first matchup was a Drexel 19-8 win back on April 3 at Hofstra. A back-and-forth game in the first half, Hofstra had the lead 7-5 heading into halftime but Drexel came out strong scoring 9 goals and holding Hofstra to 1 in the first twenty minutes of play in the second half. Hofstra star Alyssa Parrella had five goals for the Pride and Katie Whelan earned herself three assists. Drexel was led by Karson Harris’ four goals and Collen Grady’s three goals. Jess Smith was giving the lost after making 10 saves, and Zoe Bennett earned the win with seven saves. Drexel (11-1, 3-0 CAA) hosts CAA rival Towson on Friday April 23 to finish off the regular season. Hofstra (4-5, 0-2 CAA) will next play host Towson on April 25 and then play the Tigers on May 1 to finish off the regular season. 

The 17th ranked Hofstra men earned two losses this past week, losing to CAA foes Towson 10-8 and 16th ranked Delaware 14-13. The Delaware matchup went into overtime. In the first game against Towson, the Tigers had control of the first half, going into the locker-room up 7-3. Hofstra pushed for a comeback scoring the last four goals but ran out of time and Towson earned the win. Ryan Tierney led the Pride with three goals and 11 shots. Brody McLean led the Tigers with four goals. Bobby Casey got the loss and made seven saves and his counterpart Shane Brennan made 14 saves in the win.

In the second game, Hofstra had the lead 8-4 going into the half and then went up to 10-6 in the fourth before Delaware score 7 unanswered goals to go up. Hofstra scored three goals in the final minute of regulation to tie it 13-13. Delaware’s Charlie Kitchen scored the golden goal halfway into the first overtime period to give the Blue Hens the win. James Philbin had four goals for the Pride with Kitchen scoring six and Tye Kurtz with four for Delaware. Delaware (8-2, 5-1 CAA) play Towson on Saturday and finish off the regular season against UMass on Friday April 30. Hofstra (6-4, 3-3 CAA) will visit Drexel on Saturday before finishing the regular season hosting Fairfield also on Friday April 30.

The Stony Brook men easily handled SUNY and America East rival Binghamton Friday afternoon, defeating the Bearcats 22-8 and earning them a place in the America East tournament. Stony Brook scored two quick goals to start the game and held the lead the rest of the game. Binghamton was aggressive in their play but could not hold on to control the ball and Stony Brook scored 12 unanswered goals from the end of the second quarter all the way to the middle of the fourth quarter. The Seawolves had 11 different players find the net including Mike McCannel with five, four from Matt DeMeo, and Chris Pickel Jr and Tom Haun both scored Hat tricks. Stony Brook scored three goals in a matter of 35 seconds with the third one coming from Faceoff specialists Austin Deskewicz who won the faceoff uncontested and sprinted down to the goal for a snipe. Binghamton’s Thomas Greenblatt and Kevin Wincoff had two goals each. Teddy Dolan earned the loss for the Bearcats, giving up 17 goals in three quarters of play saving nine. Anthony Palma earned the win playing for 52 minutes giving up six goals with nine saves before the whole Seawolves team went to the backups for the last eight minutes of play. Binghamton (3-4 all conference games) hosts Vermont on Saturday. Stony Brook, the 18th ranked team in the nation improved to 8-3 on the season, 6-1 in America East play will host UMBC next Saturday. The Seawolves are looking for revenge after losing to the Retrievers in five overtime periods on March 6. 


The top-10 ranked Stony Brook women have not played in two weeks due to COVID-19 protocols on the team’s roster. There games against UNH and Binghamton have not yet been rescheduled. As of right now they are scheduled to head up and play UAlbany on Saturday April 24. 

The LIU men defeated Mount St. Mary’s 17-15. A back-and-forth game, there were several moments that each team had the advantage the largest occurred in the third and fourth quarters where the Sharks scored seven consecutive goals taking them from being down 13-10 to leading 17-13. The Mount’s Luke Frankeny scored five and Richie LaCalandra led the Sharks with 6 goals. Will Mark earned the winning saving 16 shots, and Dylan Furnback got the lost giving up 15 of the goals and making nine saves. Mount St. Mary’s fall to 3-9 on the season 1-5 in conference play and will next play Wagner on Saturday. LIU improve to 6-2, 5-1 in conference and will next travel to St. Joseph’s on Saturday at 3. 

The LIU women survived a late run by Saint Francis, to win 13-12. A tight game the whole time with the halftime score being 6-6, the Sharks went up 12-8 halfway through the second half and survived three consecutive goals from Saint Francis and Paige Sherlock scored the eventual game winner with 2:30 left in regulation. Saint Francis’ Emileigh Scott scored at the buzzer. Sherlock and Jen Gaffney both scored four goals for the Sharks and Scott and Livia Baker also scored four for Saint Francis. Saint Francis moves to 4-6 on the season 4-5 in conference and will play at Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday. LIU (9-2, 7-2 NEC) will host Wagner on Wednesday in the second meeting of the two teams this year. LIU lost to Wagner 14-3 on March 10 in Staten Island.
