DI Long Island teams an interesting week, with some games being cancelled and others finding easy conference wins. Here are the results.
Hofstra can’t find footing against Ranked Opponents:
The Hofstra women fell to visiting number 6 Boston College 19-7 on Saturday night after BC’s Charlotte North led the Eagles with six goals. North scored the first goal a minute into the game and the Eagles dominated from there. The Pride had a five-goal run near the middle of the second half but was halted with an Eagle’s seven goal run, the last one coming with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Sophomore Taylor Mennella led six Pride scorers with two goals of her own and junior Jess Smith made six saves in the loss. Boston College’s Rachel Hall made seven saves in the win. Boston College moved to (5-1) on the season with its only loss coming from number 1 North Carolina two weeks ago. The Eagles next play Louisville in a weekend series with one game on Friday and another on Sunday. The Pride fell to (3-2) and will travel 45 minutes to take on Long Island rival Stony Brook in a Thursday Night matchup with the number 7 Seawolves starting at 5 pm.
The Hofstra Men’s game against Towson was postponed as was their March 20 game against Syracuse. The Pride will travel to Fairfield for a 7 pm match on March 26.
Stony Brook Finding America East Play Easy:
Stony Brook women’s lacrosse dominated the first half and held off a feisty UAlbany team to defeat their SUNY rival 18-11 Saturday evening. Graduate student Ally Kennedy lead the Seawolves with six goals and fellow graduate Taryn Ohlmiller had seven assists plus a goal of her own. Kennedy showed her strength throughout the game, even scoring a goal after taking a stick to the face which caused her to come off the field for two minutes to get checked-out by the medical staff before returning to the field and scoring two more goals. UAlbany had a sluggish start and went down 3-0 before earning its first goal by sophomore Sarah Falk. The Great Danes had four players score two goals including Falk, Kendra Habinger, Katie Pascale and Kaitlin Rurka. UAlbany starter Aislinn Sweeney could not make it out of the first half after giving up eight goals on three saves and was taking out with eight minutes to go and Georgia Schneidereith replaced her and stayed in for the last 38 minutes giving up the last 10 with only two saves. Redshirt Junior Kameron Halsall made seven saves in the win. UAlbany travels to Philly to take on Drexel on Thursday at 3. Stony Brook hosts Long Island rival Hofstra at 5 on Thursday.
The Stony Brook men easily handled host UMass Lowell, winning 16-9 with seven Seawolves finding the net, including Matt DeMeo, Dylan Pallonetti, and Matt Anderson all earning hattricks. The only time the Seawolves had any trouble was at the end of the fourth where UMass Lowell ended the game on a three-goal run. Max Christides made 19 saves and gave up 15 goals fifty minutes of play and earning the loss, with Anthony Mancino replacing Christides for the last 10 minutes and giving up one goal with no saves. Anthony Palma earned the win for the Seawolves making nine saves. UMass Lowell, now 1-3, will play host NJIT next Saturday, while the Seawolves, (4-3) hosts UAlbany for a 3 pm matchup on Saturday.
LIU wins season series against SHU:
The LIU Sharks men’s team defeated the Sacred Heart Pioneers 13-8 in the third meeting of the schools this season, winning the regular season series 2-1. Richie LaCalandra and Alex Russell led the Sharks with four goals apiece, with LaCalandra tallying three assists along the way. Sal Miccio led the Pioneers with four goals of his own. Colton King made 20 saves in the loss with Will Mark making 19 saves in the win. SHU, (1-7), travels to Hobart for a Satuday matchup, while the Sharks, (4-1), heads out to Staten Island to take on Wagner college for a noontime draw on Saturday, March 27.
The LIU women’s matchup against Bryant was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The Sharks will next host Saint Francis on Wednesday for a 1 pm start.
