With the Holiday on Sunday, all games this past weekend were played on Saturday. Here is how the Super Saturday of lacrosse went down for the DI Long Island schools.
Hofstra:
For the third game in a row, the Hofstra women have fallen to a top 20 opponent. The Pride lost to number 18 Drexel 19-8 in Hempstead on Saturday. A Katie Whelan hat trick led a Pride in scoring, that was limited to only 19 shots. Drexel’s Corrine Bednarik and Karson Harris both had four goals for the Dragons. Jess Smith, earned the loss after giving up 17 goals on five saves during 58 minutes of play. Hofstra’s Samantha Tarpey gave up two goals in a minute and a half of play. Zoe Bennett got the win with four saves. Hofstra (3-4), earned its first loss in conference play, will play James Madison next Saturday in a non-conference matchup. Drexel (8-1, 1-0) will head to Annapolis and take on Navy on Wednesday. Drexel will host Hofstra on Sunday April 18.
The Hofstra men survived a late scare from Towson, winning 8-7 on Saturday in Hempstead. Justin Sykes led the Pride with a hat trick, and Bobby Casey earned the win after making 12 saves. Hofstra had a 5-2 lead into the half, and Towson tied it up 6-6 in the middle fourth. Sykes scored two of his goals in a matter of 27 seconds. Shane Brennan got the lost for Towson (3-6, 0-3) and made 10 saves. The Tigers will next play Fairfield next Saturday. The Pride (5-2, 2-1) will travel to the UMass for a Friday evening matchup.
Stony Brook:
Six ranked Stony Brook women’s lacrosse, for the second straight game, defeated an America East opponent by scoring 19 goals. The Seawolves defeated host Vermont 19-8 on Saturday up in Burlington. Tewaaraton Award watch-list player Ally Kennedy scored seven, tying her career-high in the win, and was one of eight Seawolves to find the net. Taryn Ohlmiller, another Tewaaraton Award watch-list player had a hat trick and two assists. Three Vermont players, Ava Vasile, Maris Large, and Dani Paterno all had two goals for the Catamounts. Kameron Halsall earned the win playing 47 minutes and making nine saves while giving up seven goals. Vermont’s Sophie McLaughlin played 40 minutes, giving up 15 goals with seven saves before Jackie Shipp took over and gave up the last four with five assists in 20 minutes of action. Vermont (3-4, 3-2) will face UMass Lowell on Saturday, while Stony Brook (9-2, 5-0) heads to New Hampshire for a matchup against UNH on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Stony Brook men took care of business against host Hartford, winning 17-6 and 11 different Seawolves found the net, led by Tom Haun’s hat trick with redshirt freshman standout Dylan Pallonetti adding two for himself and three assists. Anthony Palma earned the win making 11 saves, giving up five goals in 57 minutes of play. Cam Logan earned the loss for Hartford giving up 15 and saving nine. Hartford (0-5, 0-5) travels to Binghamton for a Saturday matchup. Stony Brook (6-3, 4-1) will head down to Newark on Saturday to face NJIT for the second time this season, having defeated the Highlanders 13-4 on March 14.
LIU:
The LIU women continue its winning ways against NEC opponents, defeating Bryant 11-8 on Saturday. Jamie Alvino, Paige Sherlock and Rachel Masullo had two goals each for the Sharks while Francesca Vasile-Cozzo earned four assists. Hailey Duchnowski got the win after making 12 saves. Sam Ciancio earned the loss for Bryant, giving up four goals and making five assists, playing only 22 minutes and Giana Kapoosuzian gave up seven goals with four assists. Bryant (2-3, 2-3) will face Sacred Heart on Wednesday while LIU (7-1, 5-1) will face Mount St. Mary’s Maryland on Wednesday. Bryant will host LIU for the regular-season finale on April 28.
The LIU men were handed its first nonconference lost to Merrimack 14-10 on Saturday. LIU mounted several comebacks in the match but were unable tie it up at any point and Merrimack sealed the deal scoring the last three goals. Richie LaCalandra scored four goals for the Sharks in the loss, while Christian Thomas scored six for Merrimack. Will Mark made 12 saves in the loss while Henry Vogt made 14 in the win. LIU (5-2, 4-1) will face Bryant on Saturday, while Merrimack (3-4, 2-3) will play Mount St. Mary’s Maryland on Saturday.
