Another week of lacrosse is in the books! Here’s how the locals fared:
Hofstra:
The Hofstra Pride women’s team went 1-1 during the week, losing to UAlbany 18-7 and defeating Villanova 12-9. The Great Danes held the Pride to two goals in the first and five goals in the second half, while also scoring 11 in the second for themselves, led by Kyla Zapolski’s five goals. The pride were led by a hat-trick from junior Grace Langella. Hofstra junior Jess Smith played 57 minutes in goal, allowing 15 goals and was replaced by sophomore Samantha Tarpey for the last three minutes, who gave up three goals.
In Saturday’s game against Villanova, it was all Alyssa Parrella, scoring 10 goals. Parrella was listed earlier in the day as a Tewaaraton Award watch list. The Tewaaraton award is the most prestigious individual award in college lacrosse and is given annually to the top player for both men’s and women’s lacrosse. Jess Smith earned the win, giving up nine goals and saving five. Hofstra moved to 3-1 on the season and will face Boston College next Saturday for a noon-time draw.
The Hofstra Men’s game against Towson was postponed as was their March 20 game against Syracuse. The Pride will travel to Fairfield for a 7 pm match on March 26.
Stony Brook Dominate on Sunday, Men fall on Friday:
The Stony Brook men traveled up to the Carrier Dome to face number 7 Syracuse and the Orange control the game from the beginning winning 17-9 and giving Stony Brook its third straight loss of the season. Mike McMahon, Matt DeMeo, Dylan Pallonetti and Cory Vanginhoven all had two goals. The Seawolves used three goalies, with Anthony Palma playing the first three quarters and giving up 16. Liam Daly and Kyle Herbert came in for the last quarter.
On Sunday, The Seawolves defeated NJIT 13-4 in the second game of two played at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, which saw the women’s team defeat UMass Lowell 20-4. The men were led by Vanginhoven with four goals. Anthony Palma was perfect in the last three quarters, after giving up all four goals in the first. The Seawolves are now 3-3 and 1-1 in conference play. They will face UMass Lowell on March 20.
In the earlier game, the women’s team saw ten different players find the net with Jaden Hampel, Kailyn Hart, Ally Kennedy and Taryn Ohlmiller each having hat-tricks. Kennedy and Ohlmiller also found themselves on the Tewaaraton watch list, after Ally Kennedy was named the US Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player of the Year. Kennedy had an injury scare early in the game, after a hard stick check found her on the ground for a short time but returned later in the game. Kameron Halsall earned the win after allowing three goals and making nine saves. The Seawolves will next host rival UAlbany on Saturday March 20 for a 5 pm draw.
LIU on a roll:
The Sharks have been playing good lacrosse this season., The Women’s team went 1-1 this week, losing to Wagner College 14-3 but defeating Central Connecticut State 11-5 on Saturday. Paige Sherlock scored twice in both games and was one of eight to find the net in the won against CCSU. Hailey Duchnowski started both games making 17 saves in the loss to Wagner and six saves against CCSU. The women are now 4-1 on the season and will travel to Bryant on Saturday, March 20.
The LIU men stopped a late surge from Hobart College to win 14-12. Richie LaCalandra led the Sharks with four goals. Will Mark earned the win after making 24 saves during the game. The Sharks host Sacred Heart University for the third time this season, looking to win the series after splitting the first two games. That game is scheduled for noon on March 20.
