The second week of college lacrosse has finished and there were some great games that were witnessed. Here are the results of the Long Island games from the past week.
Hofstra rolling smoothly
Coming off an upsetting season opening loss last week to St. John’s, the Hofstra Men, down at half came back and defeated host Sacred Heart 13-6. Graduate student Alex Concannon scored a game high five goals to lead the Pride over the Pioneers on Saturday in Fairfield. Hofstra found themselves down 6-4 halfway through the third quarter but took the lead after scoring nine unanswered goals to finish the game. There were six Pride goals that were unassisted. grad. student Justin Lynskey finished the game with 2 goals and 2 assists, Concannon added 1 assist to his five and redshirt sophomore Mac Gates had 11 saves in the victory. The Pride are now 1-1 on the season and wait to host Long Island rival Stony Brook on Saturday.
The Hofstra Women’s team played and won two games this past week. First on Wednesday, the Pride opened the season against Saint Joseph’s in Philly winning a close 10-9 game. All ten goals came from Long Island Natives, with Alyssa Parrella (Miller Place ’16) and Grace Langella (Smithtown West ’18) with three goals each. Junior Jess Smith had five saves in the win. On Saturday, the Pride defeated UCONN in the home opener, winning 17-11. Parrella scored seven in the game, with the third making her the all-time leading goal scorer in Colonial Athletic Association history. She ended the game with 226 goals in her career. The Pride will travel to West Point on Saturday to take on Army for a 3 pm draw.
National ranked Stony Brook had good weekend with both programs earning a Win.
The Men defeated Bryant 14-8 after a close first half saw momentum changes with both teams going on four goal runs. The first half finished tied with both teams tallying seven goals. The start of the half saw Stony Brook take its first lead of the game which was only challenged once with Bryant cutting the two-point lead with one goal. The number 20 Seawolves closed Saturday’s game with five unanswered. Junior Anthony Palma made 16 saves with grad. student Cory VanGinhoven and senior Mike McCannell both tallying hattricks. Stony Brook will next travel to Hofstra on Saturday for a 1 pm matchup with the cross-island rival.
The number 6 Seawolves Women’s team defeated Boston University on Sunday with a 20-10 victory on the Island. Senior Siobhan Rafferty and grad. student Ally Kennedy both scored five goals in route of picking up the first win of the 2021 campaign seven other Seawolves also finding the net. Goalkeepers Kameron Halsall and Hayley Hunt saw a half of action each, both making four saves and Halsall earning her fifth win of the season. The Seawolves will host number 13 USC on Tuesday, a game that was postponed last year due to the pandemic. The last time the teams met, in 2019, was a close back-and-forth game that ended with the Seawolves defending their home turf, with a 12-10 victory.
The Sharks are Fighting
The LIU Women started their season with 13-4 route over Central Connecticut State on Saturday. The game went the Sharks way for most of the game, going up 11-0, until CCSU scored their first 9 minutes into the second half. Grad. student Paige Sherlock had a game high four goals and junior goalkeeper Hailey Duchnowski having 8 saves in the win. LIU will travel up to Sacred Heart on Saturday for a 1 pm draw. Three days after the men begin their season on Wednesday with a 3 pm game at Sacred Heart.
