In a Friday night showdown, the Massapequa Chiefs manhandled the Carey Seahawks, 66-38.
It was a back-and-forth game through the entire first quarter, with the score being knotted up at 13 apiece. This would eventually change, however, with the Chiefs sparking a 21-12 run in the second quarter led by guard Paul Warnigan.
Warnigan finished the night with 16 points in a meaningful effort to push the lead. The X-factor in the second half ended up being Thomas Spero, who led the team with a game high 21 points, including 3 threes. This was due in large part to the team’s ability to move the ball around while keeping a fast pace.
“One of our main goals was to wear them down a bit, get a lot of guys in, and move the ball to create space for other players” answers coach Marty. “They (Carey) play very aggressive, so we knew we had to protect the ball, and fight through cheap shots on hard screens”.
The game plan was executed from start to finish. It may have looked bumpy at first, but the Chiefs stuck with their gameplan and it worked thoroughly later on. The starting lineup in total combined for 54 points, which took a lot of pressure off of the bench to contribute. Looking back, one of the biggest keys this team will look towards moving forward is their ball movement.
“Our ball movement was probably the most important besides our defense. When we hit the open man, make the extra pass. We’re pretty good with playing unselfish basketball”. Adding on, I couldn’t agree more.
