It was a pitcher’s duel in No. 1 Commack’s 3-1 victory at home over No. 8 Bay Shore.
It was definitely not the offensive outburst that these two teams showed when they last played earlier in the year with Commack winning 8-7. However, early on in the game it did not look like it was going to be a pitcher’s duel.
Right out of the gate Bay Shore threaten to put up a crooked number in the first inning. They quickly got the bases loaded but only managed to score one run when infielder Julia Carpenter walked to force in the game’s first run and give Bay Shore the early 1-0 lead.
Commack wasted no time in tying the game as they added a run in the bottom of the first.
After the first inning, Commack pitcher Emmi Katz was terrific, holding Bay Shore’s lineup scoreless for the rest of the game.
“We were very big on defense today. We did really well in the field,” Katz said. “We did a really good job and we stayed strong.”
Commack was very good in the field, essentially making every play behind Katz.
Bay Shore pitcher April Grzegorczyk did a very good job in her outing as well. Grzegorczyk gave up a run in the bottom of the first and then threw two scoreless innings in the second and the third innings before running into some trouble in the fourth.
With the game still tied at one in the bottom of the fourth, Commack outfielder Carol Ann Campsey drove in the go ahead run, and what would be the winning run, with an RBI double. Commack then went on to score another run in the inning with a bases loaded walk to go up 3-1 to eventually win by that score.
As the game went on, Katz continued to pitch very well and keep the Bay Shore hitters at bay for the rest of the game.
With this loss it does not eliminate Bay Shore from the playoffs. They will have to go through the losing bracket and will play their next game against William Floyd on Wednesday, May 23.
As for Commack, they will continue on as the No. 1 seed and will play Lindenhurst at home on Thursday, May 24.
